chepen, here we are
dear friends, we had to arise early today as we had to board the bus at 7:15 am!!!! we picked up our peruvian friends and enjoyed 3 hours of changing peruvian countryside. it changed from green grass to desert to sugar cane fields, rice paddies and desert again.we arrived in chepen to see mountains surounding us. the town is very clean and hilly. the hotel is really nice. hot showers!!!! we have a 4 block walk up a steep hill both ways. there is a river that runs in front of the church and we cross a bridge to get to the church. we are partnering with a missionary alliance church here in chepen.this is the first time wheels for the world has been in chepen and the people are very excited about the upcoming distribution. we spent the afternoon sorting chairs, getting the gifts, mechanic stuff organized and getting the lay of the land. we disobeyed many osha rules while hanging up a curtain to separate the wheelchairs from the wheelchair station sites. we had an easter egg hunt for the right footrests for the wheelchairs. who would know there are so many different kinds of footrests. the sound of rejoicing was heard throughout the city when a pair was matched to a chair. usa and peruvian volunteers were trained in transfers, how to go up/down ramps, stairs, the workings of the wheelchair and the ettiquite in treating the disabled. the training went well and no one was dropped or fell out of a wheelchair. the food here is great!! we continue with rice and chicken but so many different ways to fix it. some of us are asking for the recipes!!!!! that is it for now. thank you for your continued prayers and support!!!!. written by cindy vanders
